Days Inn & Suites By Wyndham Moncton
Days Inn & Suites by Wyndham Moncton is located in the Magnetic Hill area of Moncton, and next to Highway 2. There are several other hotels nearby, the Magnetic Hill amusement park, a casino, and a convention center, but very few restaurants. At first glance the location seems very good, but you need to drive on the highway, a few kilometers in the direction of the city of Moncton, to find an interesting choice of restaurants. I stayed here for one night on a very short business trip.
The property
This hotel is a large property with two floors. Outdoor parking is huge and free.
The lobby is medium in size and has no seats. The passages and common areas are very large. The establishment has several meeting rooms.
The room
My room is a large suite with a King bed. As soon as I entered this room, I picked up a strong smell of food and humidity. I found a work desk with a chair on wheels, a reading chair with its ottoman and floor lamp, a mini fridge, a small microwave oven, and a coffee machine for sachets. The small television is placed on a chest with several drawers. The TV is placed in a compartment that makes it impossible to change its orientation, for example towards the chairs or the armchair. To complete the storage space, a doorless wardrobe is available. A safe, an ironing board and its iron, and a suitcase holder were placed there. Large bedside tables are placed on either side of the bed, with accessible power outlets. A small round table and two chairs complete the furniture of this room. The bed is very comfortable and gave me a great night’s sleep.
The furniture is old and damaged; the surfaces are worn. The reading chair is sunken in and very uncomfortable. The floor is covered with a very worn carpet and covered in dirt, crumbs and other debris. The walls are dirty, and I found several spider webs on the ceiling directly above the bed. I also found stains of mascara, black, on a pillowcase. The TV was not working. I didn’t report this problem since I chose to devote my time to getting some work done.
The area of this room is very large, but it is furnished like a medium-sized room. This means that there is a lot of free space around the furniture, which gives a perception of emptiness. The available space would allow for a more elaborate layout, for example by adding a counter for the microwave and coffee machine, or for example with the addition of a sofa. In summary, this room is the size of a suite but not the layout. However, a family could benefit from this arrangement, as it provides space to place one or two extra roll-out beds. I can’t say if the hotel offers this type of add-on.
The ventilation system in the room is audible but tolerable for me.
The bathroom
Surprisingly, the size of the bathroom does not match that of the bedroom. It is of medium size. There is a shower in a bath and limited counter space around the sink. I discovered that the smell of food was coming from the ventilation hatches in the bathroom.
I was surprised to find that the height of the counter is not according to ergonomic standards and is much too low. You must bend your back to wash your hands. This situation is very unusual. This may be a clue that this room is designed for wheelchair users. However, I couldn’t find around the toilet the support bars that are usually found in this kind of bathroom. So, I concluded that it was probably a problem with the design or manufacture of the sink countertop.
Bath towels have a strong musty smell of humidity, which discourages the desire to use them.
Services
Breakfast is included with the room rate and is served in a large area next to the lobby. During my stay, they served a mix of hot and cold dishes, and they prepared omelets on site. There was little traffic in the morning and enough seating to accommodate all the guests. The property also hosts a large indoor swimming pool, which was strangely deserted during my stay.
Coffee is available in the lobby free of charge all day and there is also a convenience store where alcoholic beverages, snacks and more are sold.
The staff at the front desk are cold and are not friendly.
Wi-Fi is free and of good quality.
Design
The decoration and colors of the public areas come directly from the ’90s. All the furniture, including that of the room, is worn and damaged. The walls of the passages are damaged and dirty. The design of this property is uninteresting and in serious need of updating. There is clearly a problem of housekeeping and maintenance here.
My two cents
I can’t find a good reason to go back to this hotel. There are several other establishments of large hotel chains, literally next to this one. The next time I visit this area of Moncton, I will try my luck elsewhere. The large rooms may seem interesting for family trips, but the general uncleanliness of the room could discourage many.
The devil is in the details :
- Uncomfortable chair
- Poor cleanliness of the room
- Poor cleanliness of bedding
- Smells in the room
- Non-functional television
Pros
- Well located
- Very large room
Cons
- Dirty and damaged furniture and walls, room and common areas
- Unfriendly staff
- Bathroom countertop too low
